Jim Dowling paints memories of Ireland
I paint an Ireland of beautiful memories, and some sad ones too. They are memories inspired always by stirring Irish music and song. It is an Ireland of peaceful churches, ancient ruins, crumbling tombstones, thatch-roofed cottages, humble but strong and gifted people, gentle nuns and aged priests spending a silent hour in prayer, great oaks, flat stone walls, the tall crosses, flowers growing wildly, grazing sheep, stone-covered roads, gentle mountains, the bluest skies with the whitest clouds, and green, green, glorious green everywhere you look. But it is also an Ireland with a long history of an oppressed and persecuted and enslaved people, of penal laws, institutional poverty, famine, forced emigration that is rearing its ugly head once again in the 21st century, and an unforgiveable priest scandal.
It is, like The Last Rose of Summer, an Ireland that is dying as greedy politicians slowly and surely betray their country to the European Union and global government. They have forgotten their country's history. My hope is to preserve with my art meaningful memories of what Ireland means to millions of its caring sons and daughters throughout the world.
